we have once again failed our quest in keeping the site updated as quickly as we’d like to
we start with great intentions though!
let me try to recap by day! (day one can be found here)
day 2 was a super productive day. before we could leave for the studio though, it was required for tim to nail a trick basketball shot on his fisher price basketball hoop (which has provided us so much joy over the years!). it was one of those moments where we were joking about making a crazy shot and after the first attempt, thought… hmm he might actually get it, lets start rolling the ol’ iphone! btw, this angle does not do its awesomeness any justice!
once arriving to the studio, we quickly got going, made some great progress and were sitting nicely ahead of schedule by early afternoon of this second day. at this point we were done tracking core guitar parts and all drums and bass for these tunes.
- the fantastic hours
- corners
- collide us
- chase the ghost
- imaginary friend #2
- pacific ne
getting a bit ahead of schedule allowed us to start tracking some wurlitzer parts.
we left the studio feeling good on the progress that we made and also a little relieved that we definitely had time to finish this thing up!
the next morning started with another silly basketball shot! since day 2 was so productive after tim nailed the one a day earlier, it was dave’s turn to try and sink one in hopes of keeping the studio momentum going for round 3.
after the shot, we headed over to the R-A-S (Rock’A Space) to load up the rhodes. this was the first time all 4 of us where in the LA practice space together since 2010.
we loaded up the rhodes, headed to the studio, grabbed breakfast burritos and got down to business. since we had the rhodes, we decided to make that the priority for the early part of the day. we retracked all of the wurlitzer parts we did the day before (so that we could have options later on in the process).
in addition to retracking some electric piano from the day before, we also hit up the below tunes:
- imaginary friend #7
- movie music
- bauhaus balconies
- a new little ditty with rishi on rhodes and tim on drums tentatively called “bullet holes”
also, it was a nice treat that day to have our good friends molter and kay, from the fantastic band beware of safety, come by the compound to say howdy. with dave and rishi on the east coast, it has been quite some time since all of us have got to hang. we knew this was only the start of it though, because 1. it was murphy’s birthday celebration later that night, and 2. rishi’s sister and brother in law, were coming up from san diego. so we needed to wrap up a little early for some good times of hanging with old friends and celebration later in the evening.
after another day of making good progress, we all went out for the night and just got to cut loose a bit!
sunday. last day in the studio. last day for rishi and dave to be in la. was going to be a long day for the east coasters who once we wrapped up the remaining parts of our to-do list, would hop on a red-eye back to new york… and then back to work on monday
tis’ a labor of love they say!
our list of to-do’s was getting much smaller, and we knew we would finish up everything we had set out to accomplish. we did more guitars, electric and acoustic, some acoustic piano, and vibraphones (played by our pal and studio assistant dave macewan). at around 5:30, we started breaking everything down, and putting everything on murphy’s external hard drive. we were done tracking!
needless to say, we are now 2 weeks post recording, and are starting to listen back to everything we recorded. murphy has begun mixing, and honestly, we couldnt be more proud and excited to share with you all. not sure exactly on a release date, but we are aiming for sometime likely in (r)october.
thank you everyone for your continued support! here are some pics/vids from the last few days in the studio (courtesy of jeff lewis and dave’s phone).
