howdy everyone!

we hope this finds you all doing well! thought we would take a moment & give a couple of quick updates.

firstly, this is super belated, but we wanted to start by saying that we thank you all so much for attending our east coast shows, and for ordering our split with all india radio. we sincerely appreciate your support and couldn’t continue doing this without you! we were very fortunate to play with some amazing bands, and met loads of new friends along the way!  the trip was a great one, and we hope to do it again soon!

for those of you who couldn’t make it, we’ve put up a couple of live videos from the tour on our site. we will be uploading more in the coming weeks.  you can view those by going here.

on a side-but-related note, our new friends north end who we played our first show of the tour with in west chester pa, have a new album that came out this week called atlantica. do yourself a favor and go jam it, it’s great!

there’s a lot going on in the new music department! let’s start with the immediate.

more hope for japan- compilation

we recently contributed an unreleased cover song for a benefit comp called: more hope for japan. the proceeds from all sales will be donated to the american red cross each week/month, to help rebuild japan in light of the horrific events which occurred in march.  we are honored to contribute along with 36 (yes 36!) other bands for the second installment of the series for a great cause! this will be available in an ultra-limited quantity of 100 cd’s ( all numbered, and on 4 discs!), as well as digital download.  the pre-order begins sunday nov 20th (tomorrow) and will be available on their site here:, they will definitely go fast! the “street date” as they say, will be dec 9th. this is the date which the cd’s will ship and digital downloads will be available. mark your calendars!

37 songs, by 37 bands, including message to bears, anoice, thisquietarmy, her name is calla…. and frankly too many great bands to mention! don’t believe us? see the full tracklist here.

our addition to the comp is a cover of a song called the radiator by one of our favorite bands, ida. we made this instrumental version for fun a few years back, and are glad that we finally got a chance to release it!

new album – yep, its coming!

we have been working on new material this whole year and think we are pretty darn close to finalizing the tracklist. it looks to be about 9-10 songs at this point. being apart on separate coasts has brought us a fresh perspective on song writing, and we are excited to share the progress.

the plan is to wrap up the demos by early 2012, get together as a full band in NYC for a few days to put the finishing touches, and record in early spring.  more details coming soon!

additionally, since we will all be together in NYC, we decided to plan on doing a show as well! so friends in and around NYC, stay tuned for more info!

tour update

so the tour is happening in just a few weeks! we’ve been re-learning the tunes after not having played them in ages, and man it feels good. we will regroup as a full band in brooklyn ny for the first  time in almost a year… we seriously can’t believe that it’s been that long!

in our “help pick our setlist” poll, paper airplanes and the dead vineyard are the two most requested songs so far!  the poll will remain open until just before midnight on friday sept 2^nd .

we are playing with some great bands and hope you can make it out if you’re in the area!

split 7” with our buddies all india radio

as mentioned in our last email, we are doing a split 7” with our melbourne australia friends, all india radio. each band will have one song special to this release. our tune happens to be one of the brand new jams we’ve been working on. the bass and drums were tracked last weekend in california, and guitars will be tracked this weekend in new york. this release will be pressed on solid red vinyl, and super limited to only 250 copies. we will have it at one of our upcoming shows and will put a limited amount on pre-order prior to the release and tour!

new beware of safety album

ok, this is not signal hill news per se’ however, its news about our very good friends beware of safety. their new album, leaves/scars dropped this week and is available for purchase/streaming now from their bandcamp page. go listen and get phased! they are also hitting tour on the west coast,  so peeps on the western US, check their schedule and definitely check em’ out if they hit your town!!

howdy everyone!

we hope this finds you well as we head into the thanksgiving weekend!  things here have been good. we have begun writing some new tunes, and are in early discussions for a few shows in the east coast early next year! we are thankful for your continued support and still cant believe that a little over 6 years ago now, our little group got together to have fun and make some tunes. happy to say that 6 years later, we all still get the same enjoyment!

first of all, a very big thank you to you all for purchasing, listening to, and or sharing our latest ep distance. we are proud of it and think it has a few of the best songs we have written to date! for those of you who haven’t grabbed the limited edition cd and 7″ you can grab em in our distance ep /ca is too long store page.

so what else is new? well, rishi made it back to the US after living in edinburgh, scotland for a year. he’s currently living in san diego and spending additional time up in LA. CA is sure lucky to have him back! he has been hard at work on his solo album that he will be putting out later this year. its a collection of songs that he has written over the past few years, under the moniker avesta.sweden. he tracked it himself, and is being mixed and mastered by of our good pal patrick murphy (more after we’re gone & distance).  it should be finished in the next few months so stay tuned for more info.  its sounding great!

tim has started a new project called the azure vault with our good friend steve molter (beware of safety, le sigh, ::thinkstandard::) .  they are working out the final touches before playing their first 2 shows in october! its a new world for tim as he plays rhodes, guitar, and other misc items (and of course a few drums!).

brian is still waiting for the lovely car rental insurance place to replace his bass!  it was oh, you know, 2 months ago that our van got broken into and they are still trying to make a decision….. lovely insurance! aside from that, brian (aka stache) has been working, finishing up school and being a good pops to baby lauren!

dave and his wife are actually moving to brooklyn, ny later this week!  what does this mean for signal hill… well:

1. east coast tour early next year
2. continue to write and record tunes
3. continue to play in the west as permitted

so besides not having rehearsal regularly (which we hadn’t in over a year), and not being able to play shows as frequently as we would like (also not much different than the past year), not really much changes! we are committed to writing and recording music with each other for as long as it remains fun… and frankly, we have a lot of fun.

we have already begun talking about writing our next set of material, not to mention that when we went in to record Distance, we actually had about 5 other demos recorded that are sitting on the backburner. so… rest assured, plenty more to come!

also, we are doing a website redesign soon!

so what else? let’s see… 2 of our tunes were featured in a series of Fox BMX videos, floruit was featured in a stand-up surf video from soul surf media, as well as some other videos that we have seen across the net! its great seeing our music in these types of videos, most of us grew up skateboarding and or snowboarding, and watching those videos as teenagers opened us up to a lot of the music we listen to today! here are a few of the vids  below!

the time has come. our new ep, distance and 7″ of ca is too long – alternate b/w down to bed, are available now!

the cd is limited to 300 physical copies, and comes packaged in a silk screen printed eco wallet. they are hand numbered, although, we didnt actually number them. we wanted to make them a bit more personalized, so we thought we would do something a little more fun. each cd has a unique hand written phrase that has an inside story about signal hill. as you get your copy, we encourage you to email us, so that we can share the story.  everyone gets something different!

the vinyl is also limited to 300 copies and is pressed on white wax. these are all hand numbered.  the 7″ was an idea conceived by a dear friend, nicolas the dictator, who helped get signal hill off the ground more than 5 years ago. when we released our self titled ep and he  listened to our song “california is too long” he said it was mandatory that it end up on a white 7″ somehow. four years later we have it and this newer recording, we call it the alternate version, sounds better than we dreamed of at the time. the b-side is a song called down to bed.

For those of you who don’t know, Dr. Healy posed his theory of telescopic evolution in Richard Linklater’s film, Waking Life. His monologue in the film inspired much of the most recent Signal Hill album, More After We’re Gone. A vocal sample from Dr. Healy’s scene is featured in track 4 of the album, entitled “Men Before Them“.

When we added the sample to the tune, Tim emailed Dr. Healy for his blessing and sent him a copy of the tune. He enjoyed the song and was very generous in letting us use the sample for the album.

Since Tim visits Austin frequently, he made it a mission to one time drop by St. Edward’s University (where Dr.Healy works)  and share with him a copy of the record.  Tim called his office on Tuesday morning asking if he could swing by and Dr. Healy cheerfully said yes!

Tim really enjoyed sharing time with Dr. Healy, who he characterized as super friendly, charismatic, and genuine. happy new year everyone!

we hope you all had a wonderful holiday season!  2009 went by pretty fast and it was definitely a crazy year.  we cant thank you all enough for all of your support! of course we all have our individual highlights, but as a band here are some of the significant notables (which ill attempt at chronological order):

1. brian and his wife welcomed baby lauren to the world on feb 25
2. we finished recording and put out our debut album  more after we’re gone
3. had our cd release party at pehrspace with good friends beware of safety and timonium
4. did a mini tour of australia (sans physical dave, with his parts performed flawlessly by his digital counterpart: tim’s  roland sampler)
5. we played our final show of 2009 in august with friends the littlest viking and beware of safety at echo curio (SIDE NOTE: besides the australian shows, we played everyone of our shows in 2009 with beware of safety)
6. went back into the studio in late august to begin recording a new ep
7. a week or so after going to the studio, rishi moved to scotland to pursue his masters in design and digital media at the university of edinburgh
8. with rishi away, we continued writing music via the internet. the 3 of us who remained stateside would occasionally get together to take a stab at working out some of the tunes in the practice space.
9. in mid december rishi came home for a couple of weeks! we were thrilled to see him and got the chance to play together live for the first time since august. we had no time to waste though as we saw him for the first time on friday, worked together live for the first time on these tunes,  and went into the studio early the next morning to finish tracking the ep!
10. we spent two days back at the compound in signal hill along with our friend jeff lewis and patrick murphy (both who helped on the album) as well as dave’s wife pamela who took pics and help document it (review of the session and pics at the compound site here).

we did a couple end of the year interviews (which includes some of our favorite albums and films from 09).. you can check those out here & here .

with 2009 out of the way,  we have lots of exciting stuff coming for 2010!  lets start with the ep that we talked about. so far we have tracked 10 songs within the two seperate sessions, which likely 5 or 6 of them will make an ep. the tracknames and finalized tracklist arent done yet, but jeff from the compound had a funny take on the working titles (check it here)  he knows us too well! also not quite sure on the timing.. hopefully by spring we have it out. stay tuned here!

also, our last post on our site we talked about a tshirt contest. we are beyond stoked at the  turnout and thrilled that one of the below designs will be printed on our next t shirt (we may even do stickers with the second place one if it works out!) ! we want to thank everyone who took the time to put together a design and we will find a way to hook you all up with something in the near future for your efforts.   we did have the not so pleasant task of narrowing down the designs to a manageable voting number. in order to do  so we  all voted for our  favorite designs to  narrow it the list down to the top 3 (which almost ended up being a top 4 because of how the voting turned out). needless to say here are the top three and it is up to you to decide who the winner is! we will take votes until the 31st of January!
